Being active should be easy to start — and easy to keep doing. WGAT is about creating a welcoming local place where people can move at their own pace.
The challenge
Physical activity benefits health, confidence and wellbeing, but many people face practical or personal barriers to becoming active. The latest figures used in the WGAT case show that 64.6% of adults achieve the recommended 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week, leaving more than a third below that level.
For children, only 49.1% of 5–16 year-olds achieve the recommended average of 60 minutes of activity a day. Government guidance also stresses that any activity is better than none: benefits begin well before someone sees themselves as an athlete.

That’s where WGAT comes in
We are proposing something deliberately straightforward: a high-quality, accessible place in the heart of the community where being active feels normal. Not just for club runners and not just for established athletes.
A place for different people and different starting points
Beginners and people returning to activity
A visible local facility can provide a clear, manageable place to begin — whether that means a ten-minute walk or the first session of a structured programme.
Women and girls
A purpose-designed environment would provide another option for people who may feel less comfortable exercising alone on roads or poorly lit routes.
Children and young people
The track could support running, fundamental movement skills, junior athletics and positive early experiences of activity.
Older people and walkers
A predictable surface could support walking, gentle exercise and confidence in movement.
Wheelchair users and people with mobility needs
Inclusive design and a consistent surface are central to the ambition for a genuinely accessible community facility.
Clubs and community groups
The track could support organised sessions while complementing the existing sporting and recreational use of Whitemans Green.
Walk. Run. Wheel. Train. Get started.
WGAT is about making everyday activity easier to choose.
