Whitemans Green Active Track has continued to move forward since our first public updates in January. Here is where the project stands, what has been happening behind the scenes and what comes next.
Building the foundations for delivery
WGAT is an ambitious community project to create an approximately 1km, two-lane synthetic track around Whitemans Green recreation ground in Cuckfield. The aim is to provide a welcoming, accessible and dependable place where people can walk, run, wheel, exercise and train throughout the year.
Since the beginning of 2026, work has continued across the areas needed to turn that ambition into a deliverable project: concept design, governance, stakeholder engagement, funding, partnerships and the route towards planning.
Developing the track concept
The project has continued to develop the concept for a track following the perimeter of Whitemans Green. The proposal remains focused on an accessible, all-weather surface that can complement the recreation ground’s existing sporting and community uses.
At this stage, the plan remains a concept rather than a final construction design. Further technical work and consultation will be needed as the project progresses through the planning and detailed-design stages.
Governance and charitable structure
A strong and accountable organisation is essential for a project of this scale. An application for a charitable incorporated organisation has been submitted. This is an important step towards establishing the governance needed to manage the project responsibly, build partnerships and pursue appropriate funding opportunities.
We will share a further update once the application process has been completed. Until then, we are careful not to describe the charitable structure as formally established.
Stakeholders and partnerships
Conversations have continued with relevant organisations and stakeholders about the project and the steps required to take it forward. These discussions help refine the proposal, identify practical considerations and ensure that WGAT develops in a way that works alongside the other valued uses of Whitemans Green.
We are also exploring the partnerships that will be needed for delivery. We will distinguish clearly between organisations we are consulting, organisations we are working with and confirmed project supporters, and will publish names or logos only where the relationship and permission are clear.
Funding the project
Work is under way to develop a realistic funding strategy. A successful community facility is likely to require a combination of grant funding, charitable support, corporate partnerships, community fundraising and individual contributions.
Formal fundraising opportunities will be announced when the appropriate structure and mechanisms are in place. In the meantime, expressions of interest from potential partners, sponsors, funders and community supporters are very welcome.
